Outdoor Research focuses on inclusivity by offering extended, plus sizing in technical apparel
New OR collections comprise the most technical outdoor apparel on the market in extended and plus sizing.
SEATTLE, Wash. (May 27, 2021) – Inspired by the lack of truly technical apparel and layering systems in inclusive sizes, Outdoor Research, the Seattle based manufacturer of outdoor apparel, will introduce extended and plus sizing in a range of base layers, insulation and shells for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.
The effort is being led in partnership with a panel of six advisors to the Outdoor Research R+D team – outdoor athletes who have been challenged by the ability to find technical apparel suitable for their needs. One of the advisory team members, Bennett Rahn, wasn’t able to find technical climbing pants in her size for a Single Pitch Instructor Course, an item on the required gear list for her climbing course. She was able to work with the course’s leaders to allow her to complete the course in leggings, but now she and others will be able to find technical apparel from OR in a much wider range of sizes.
“This is about getting people outside – people whose outdoor experiences are compromised by the lack of outdoor clothing that fits and performs well,” said Liz Wilson, VP of Product, and one of the Outdoor Research R+D team members leading the effort. “To make sure we are meeting their needs, we partnered with a group of advisors representing this long-underserved community of guides, athletes and adventurers. And with their help, we begin a journey toward empowering outdoor adventures for all.”
Along with Rahn, the Outdoor Research inclusive sizing advisory committee includes Sam Ortiz, Megan Banker, Kaila Walton, Rochelle Murphy and Britta Nelson. This team has been a key part of the development process, fit sessions and field testing.
“Inclusive sizing isn’t a product launch – it’s a commitment to doing things intentionally and, frankly, it’s something that is long overdue,” Wilson said. “There are no brands at present focusing on a layering system of highly technical apparel, from base layers to insulation and outer shells. So, for us, this is a starting point from which we plan to build on as we become a more inclusive brand.”
OR is creating the most technical outdoor offering in extended and plus sizing.
The Fall 2021 extended sizing program, which includes sizes ranging from XXS to XXXL, will include core styles like the ultralight and 100% waterproof Helium Rain Jacket and Pants. The Snowcrew Jacket and Pants are built for resort skiing and snowboarding with a powder skirt, helmet-compatible hood, pit zips and internal gaiters. The 700-fill Coldfront Hoodie and Vest combine recycled and responsibly sourced materials to create a durable, all-purpose insulation layer. In addition, the Alpine Onset base layers, Trailmix Pullover and Full Zip, and Feedback Flannel add a layering system and lifestyle pieces to the collection.
The Spring 2022 Plus Size collection launches in 1X-3X, and 16W-24W, and offers a fit for a different body shape with grading that is proportionality larger through the bust and belly. The collection includes key pieces in rain protection, the Helium Rain Jacket, Aspire II Jacket and Aspire Pants. The Cirque II Pants are OR’s most reliable soft shell pants for ice climbing, alpine climbing and mountaineering. The Helium Insulated Hoodie is OR’s most durable, lightweight and technical 800 fill down jacket. Other pieces in the hiking, climbing and sun protection collection include the Echo Hoodie, Echo T-Shirt, Astroman Sun Hoodie, Ferrosi Pants and Ferrosi Shorts.
These first two seasons are just a start to Outdoor Research’s commitment to evolving its product collections toward the goal of breaking down barriers and empowering more people to get outside – skiing, hiking, mountaineering and more.
