What’s New?

Outdoor Research Grows Commitment to Inclusive Sizes, Adds Innovation in Snowsports, Insulation, Gloves

With its Fall 2022 collection, Outdoor Research reinvents mobility in snow apparel, along with offering a line of more than 30 technical apparel layers in inclusive sizing.

Outdoor Research, the Seattle-based maker of technical outdoor apparel and gear, has long led the way in innovation for outdoor sports like skiing, climbing, hiking and other backcountry sports. Along with unveiling a range of new innovations in snowsports, insulation layers, gloves and technical sportswear for Fall 2022, OR is also leading the way forward in more inclusive sizing for outdoor activities.

For the coming fall season, it has grown its Extended and Plus sizing to encompass more than 30 styles of shells, insulation, mid-layers, base layers, sportswear and gloves. No other brand offers as comprehensive a line of technical apparel in sizes XXS to 4X — different layers designed to work as a system — as Outdoor Research.

Beyond working to grow inclusivity in outdoor apparel, the OR product team has also continued to expand its use of more sustainable materials, with the integration of more recycled content across the Fall 2022 collection. And it has introduced a number of key new styles and updates, including: a new version of the award-winning Hemispheres Jacket and Bibs, which offer unparalleled mobility in a waterproof ski system; a reinvention of its heated and core alpine glove systems; and a range of new offerings in synthetic insulation layers. The following overview offers highlights of the Fall 2022 line.

Hemispheres II Jacket and Bibs

Setting the bar for unparalleled mobility in weatherproof ski apparel, the Hemispheres II Jacket and Bibs employ a unique stretch GORE-TEX fabric to create a shell kit that is — quite simply — like nothing else on the market. First introduced in 2018, and winner that year of the first-ever Powder Magazine Apparel of the Year Award, the Hemispheres II builds on the original kit’s proven feature set with an updated, fresh, athlete-driven design and optimized placement of the stretch waterproof fabric. Key to the Hemispheres II functionality are hybrid-mapped panels of GORE-TEX Fabric with Stretch Technology. This unique material offers incredible stretch for a waterproof fabric. That means the Hemispheres pieces adapt easily to users’ movements. Panels of that fabric are used in the center upper back and lower part of the hood in the jacket, a new design that not only optimizes stretch during movement, but also provides better performance under a backpack. Panels of stretch fabric are also used in the wrist area of the jacket, improving functionality with undercuff gloves, as well as in the crotch gusset and lower back on the bibs for movement. The stretch panels in the Hemispheres are paired with GORE-TEX C-Knit fabric elsewhere. Length on the jacket is slightly longer than in earlier versions. Purpose-built for skiers and snowboarders, nothing else delivers the same combination of trusted weather protection and high-mobility comfort as the Hemispheres II.

Men’s and women’s fits. $629 each.

Snowcrew Jacket, Reveler Jacket, Bibs and Pants

Built for the demands of pounding out lap after lap at the ski hill but with versatility for beyond the ski area boundary, the Snowcrew Jacket, Bib and Pants are the warmest ski-specific kit in the Outdoor Research collection. Premium, recycled-content fabrics and insulation paired with durable construction bely a sharp price point — in line with the demands of a huge range of skiers. The bibs are new for Fall 2022, as are new camo patterns and colors in the jacket and pants. The men’s jacket uses a combination of 80- and 60-gram VerticalX ECO insulation. The women’s jacket uses a combination of 100- and 80-gram. The bibs and pants employ 45 gram insulation in the seat and thighs. Vertical X Eco is a proprietary insulation from Outdoor Research that offers a superior warmth-to-weight ratio, more effective breathability in active situations, and better loft retention over time. It’s made from 85 percent recycled content. On the outer, OR’s stretchy waterproof Ventia® fabric is made from 56 percent recycled materials. Features include pit zips, a powder skirt, a pass pocket and inner thigh vents and cuff gaiters on the bibs and pants. Men’s and women’s fits, as well as women’s plus sizing to size 4X. There is also the new women’s Snowcrew Reveler Jacket, designed for versatile function and style both on and off the slopes.

Shadow Insulated Jacket and Pants

Incredibly versatile insulation layers made with eco-conscious materials, the Shadow Insulated Jacket and Pants provide warmth paired with breathability for stop-and-go activities in cold temperatures. They’re also versatile layers that work great for year-round use. Continuing Outdoor Research’s leadership in the category of ‘active’ puffy layers like the Uberlayer and Ascendant jackets, the Shadow pieces use VerticalX ECO SR insulation, which is made from REPREVE recycled polyester and 37% bio-based Sorona. This pairing of partially recycled and naturally derived contents is not only a more sustainable choice, it results in a higher-loft insulation, offering 20 percent more loft over regular VerticalX insulation. VerticalX ECO SR insulation is paired with stretchy, breathable 20D stretch woven nylon/spandex shell and lining.

$199 and $179.

SuperStrand LT Hoodie, Jacket and Vest

SuperStrand LT styles employ a unique new synthetic insulation — VerticalX™ SuperStrand — that helps create the best warmth-to-weight layering package Outdoor Research has ever offered. Ideal for four-season warmth, this collection features a unique quilt pattern that reduces stitching, creating an uninterrupted flow of insulation and warmth. Soft and supple construction creates an amazingly comfortable wearing experience. The unique lofted polyester strands in VerticalX™ SuperStrand mimic the shape of thousands of down clusters connected along a strand, truly blending the best properties of down and synthetic insulation. This material has extremely high loft, offers warmth if it gets wet, and is more resistant to compression over time than down. This ultra lightweight layering package (309 grams, men’s medium hoodie) is capped with a bluesign® approved, windproof 12D nylon shell fabric.

Men’s and women’s. $219

Women’s Shadow Reversible Parka

A bluesign approved stretch woven shell is paired with OR’s VerticalX ECO SR insulation, which is made from REPREVE recycled polyester and 37% bio-based Sorona. This pairing of partially recycled and naturally derived contents not only offers more sustainable materials, it results in a higher-loft insulation, offering 20 percent more loft over regular VerticalX insulation. This reversible parka provides versatility and style with the warmth and weather protection provided by technical materials.

The burly nylon canvas shell on the Del Campo Down Parka was selected specifically for durability, weather protection and recycled content, creating an outer layer built to withstand years of heavy use. A plethora of 700-fill down inside provides warmth in the coldest temps. Synthetic VerticalX ECO Insulation is used at the top of the shoulders, an area more exposed to weather and moisture. Functional features abound, like a insulated front storm flap, dual snap chest pockets, tricot-lined hand pockets and wrist cuffs with an internal rib-knit gaiter.
